Parking Lot Repair Work

During the week of September 10-17, we will be crack sealing, seal coating and re-striping the entire parking lot for this facility (excluding the auxillary lot on the opposite side of Discovery Pl.).
The project will be completed by sections, so please anticipate fewer spots available in the main lot over this week.

Odyssey Illusions Magic Show

What a great turn out. I counted over 416 kids and families at the event! It certainly looked like everyone had a great time. My son sure enjoyed the escape from the straight jacket and the "dry....colored.....sand"!

We hope to have a small event in September with hors d'ouvres and a jazz band on the back lawn. Keep you eyes open.

New Drain Covers

What is with the New Drain Covers?
Maybe you have noticed that each pool now has new drain covers.

These drain covers can be a hassle. There have been many complaints about the raised edges.

Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act.
15 USC 8001

On December 19, 2007, Congress passed a new law regulating changes in pool operations including a new standard for pool drain covers.

The law went into effect near the end of 2008.

All pools must have an unblockable drain. These drains must comply with the ASME/ANSI A112.19.8 performance standard and must be installed by a specially-certified technician.

Unblockable Drain
An unblockable drain is a drain of any size and shape that a human body cannot sufficiently block to create a suction entrapment hazard.

These new drains covers were recently installed. The raised edges are designed to prevent entrapment and injury from suction.

From 1990-2004, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has reports of 74 incidents involving bodypart entrapment. Of those 74 reports, 13 people died and two were disemboweled.

The new drain covers are designed to prevent serious injury. They can be a trip hazard, so please watch your toes.

If you have any questions, please ask the Headguard.

Member & Volunteer Pat Fuji in the news

Exerpt from article in Boise Weekly, Vol. 17, Issue 48.

..."At age 77, balance and posture are considerations for Pat Fujii, who first saw the class while volunteering at the West Boise YMCA. While Fujii described how beneficial tai chi is for seniors, she mentioned that she is also a competitive sprinter and long jumper who will represent Idaho at the upcoming Senior Games.
As an athlete, Fujii noticed how the jarring motion of running hurt her joints. But tai chi taught her a new way of moving and standing, and since beginning her practice seven years ago, she said she's noticed an improvement in how she feels."

Here is where you get to share your creativity. Please make your own post and also encourage other members to log on and share.

Protect your belongings at the YMCA

Here are some tips to help you protect your belongings while you and your family are at the YMCA:
1. DO NOT bring in cash or valuable items.
2. Lock your locker- token lockers are the most secure and tokens are available for free at the front desk and at the health & wellness desk.
3. Make sure your name is saved in your ipod. We will try to find the owner as we find/locate them.
4. Report any suspicious behavior to staff! Help protect your fellow members.
